At the age of 17 Chris made his first trip over to Europe and competed in the Youth European Championships where he made the Gold Fleet. After competing in Europe he new that this was exactly what he wanted to do and decided to start campaigning for the Olympics in 2012. Chris had a good start to his campaign winning the US Nationals in 2008, North American Championships in 2009, Canadian Championships in 2010 while also competing in all the World Cup events making Gold fleets at every regatta. In the beginning of 2011, Chris suffered a set back at Miami OCR, where he torn his labrum in his hip. He was in 6th place in the regatta but had to pull out and head back to Canada for surgery. This allowed him to successfully coach the SLYC High Performance team for two years. Vaughn then went on to coach the Laser Race Team of RCYC and the 420 collegiate Queens University Sailing team and the RCYC High Performance Team alongside Chris Cook. To further develop his coaching and racing skills, Vaughn has been coaching and racing in the World Cup circuit which put him in Miami, Netherlands, France and Estonia.
